PROVO — The decision by Jason Chaffetz to leave Congress is costing Utah’s counties.

The counties involved are estimating it will cost them more than $670,000 dollars to host the special election.

Utah County Clerk/Auditor Bryan Thompson says they’ll pay $500,000 of that total.

“We are the majority of the 3rd congressional district. Just that in and of itself means we have a higher cost,” he said.

Salt Lake County will pay $107,000, Wasatch $24,000, Grand $16,000, San Juan $13,000 and Emery County $6,000.

Any city that cancels a municipal primary means the county has to pick up the cost.

Some counties are dipping into rainy day funds and asking the state for reimbursement.

Chaffetz has not yet commented on the costs.
