Salt Lake City widens firework restrictions

SALT LAKE CITY — After spending much of the July 4th holiday putting out blazes, the Salt Lake City Fire Department has decided to close off more of Utah’s capitol city to personal fireworks.

“This usually impacts rural homes and areas like that, but I am seeing more and more this year that are impacting cities,” said Brian Mellor, fire marshal for the city.

Mellor said in 11 days July nearly outpaced the number of fires the department fought in all of June, “This year has been something that I can’t recall seeing in quite a long time. It’s a pretty bad year.”

The department has outlawed fireworks East of 900 East, West of Redwood Road and North of South Temple. You can hear more in the audio story below:
