SALT LAKE CITY — You should have received your property tax valuation in the mail, and you may be asked to pay more.

Taxpayer groups say Utahns should attend the august “truth in taxation” hearings. Evelyn Everton with Americans for Prosperity Utah chapter, says if people don’t email or call or comment or go in-person, then governments think it’s ok to keep doing what they are doing.

“This is your money, you earned this money and you are just giving it to the government. You should feel like you have the ability to weigh in on how it is being spent,” she said.

65 local entities are proposing property tax hikes, including school districts, libraries and fire authorities.

Everton says there is too much waste.

“Is this a necessary government service? Often, governments will try to provide services that private companies can provide with better results, so these questions should constantly be asked of our elected officials,” she said.
