OGDEN — Students woke up this morning to find black and white flyers covering other advertisements for movie showings, club events, and other posters. The flyers asked students if they were tired of “anti-white propaganda” and encouraged readers to look into the alt-right movement.
Today, they were torn down.
“They were taken down not in a way of censoring the message/freedom of speech, but following university policy,” said Allison Hess, WSU spokesperson.
The university Diversity Officer, Adrian Gillespie Andrews, said the posters have prompted a host of calls from students asking if it’s okay for posters of that nature to go up on campus. She said it’s encouraged her to organize meetings for students to discuss free speech and civility on campus.
“My office is the process of putting together some open dialogue times for students to come together specifically to address these posters.” Andrews said.
She said they’ll work these meetings into a program already addressing race, culture and civility on campus called the “Engaged Learning Series”. Andrews said any students with concerns or support for the posters are welcome to attend.
