SALT LAKE CITY — The busiest freeway ramp into downtown Salt Lake City is shut down after a crash that killed a pedestrian early this morning.

SLC Police Detective Robert Ungricht told KSL a 28-year-old woman was crossing 600 South between 400 and 500 West when she was struck by a vehicle coming downtown from I-15. They are working to notify family now.

“This is a sad tragedy,” he said. “I don’t know what she was doing crossing here at this time of day when heavy traffic is coming into downtown Salt Lake City.”

“They’ll diagram this crash, they will determine speed, and the placement of the pedestrian in the intersection and things like that,” said Ungricht.

The situation for commuters is complicated because of the long-running construction project closing the ramp from I-15 to 900 South. Drivers who cannot exit there have been using 600 South as an alternate for the last several weeks. Police are allowing all commuters to exit at 400 South, which is normally restricted to carpoolers and drivers with toll passes.
