The University of Utah is preparing for a speech by conservative author Ben Shapiro this September.

University spokesman Chris Nelson is part of a team in Berkeley on Thursday seeing how campus handles the speech there.

“How the police react, how their administration handles it. We are hoping to see how they ensure the physical safety of their students,” he said.

Some University of Utah students are upset that Shapiro is coming on September 27. They camped outside U President David Pershing’s office this week.  But Nelson says they cannot cancel it.

“This is a legitimate student group, Young Americans for Freedom, that invited Mr Shapiro,” he explained. “But I have been clarifying to people that doesn’t mean the University endorses anything he has to say.”

He says the U of U honors diversity and free speech.
