Puerto Ricans now living in Utah are gathering donations and supplies for their devastated home island.

Carlos Nunez is leading the effort called “Utah support for Puerto Rico.”

“I have my family there. My mom just called me today, almost crying, because yesterday she said they made it back home at 11 just to get some water and gas,” he said, adding that their communication has been spotty at best.

Nunez says the word spread on Facebook, and reached the attention of Vivint’s VP of sales, who is also from Puerto Rico.  Now Vivint is going to help with transporting the donations to the island.

“With money, it makes it so we can identify what we need. But now that we have the support from Vivint, it will allow us to ship items out and transport them,” he said.

They especially need things like water, soap, diapers and first aid kits. Donations can be dropped off at Vivint offices in Lehi and Provo Wednesday through Saturday.

Nunez says Puerto Ricans jumped to help other islands around them after the earlier hurricans.

“They gave so much. Now we need the help,” he said.
