Salt Lake City School District welcoming more grades for in-person instruction

SALT LAKE CITY — It is a big week for the Salt Lake City School District.
For the first time in nearly a year, fourth through 12th grade students have the option to head back to in-person learning at most schools.
Secondary students are split by last name, and they only attend class two days a week. So the other half of the seventh through 12th grade students start on Tuesday.
Wednesday will remain a remote-learning day throughout the school district.
High school students are required to get a negative COVID-19 test before they can attend class. A round of testing was held over the weekend at the high schools. Also, an orientation was held for ninth graders who not been inside their high school yet.
Teachers have told those secondary students to bring their laptops and headphones to be on a Zoom meeting in the building with their online classmates.
Elementary school grades have phased back to in-person learning since the end of January. The rest of the elementary school students in grades fourth, fifth and sixth grades were allowed to choose to go back Monday four days a week.
But it doesn’t seem to include Hawthorne Elementary School, which is a magnet ELP school. Parents of Hawthorne students say they were not given a choice and that the teachers want to stay remote. They are still working with the principal on that.
