New Spanish Fork police chief took oath of office on Tuesday

SPANISH FORK, Utah — Matthew R. Johnson took the oath of office as the 45th Chief of Police for Spanish Fork City on Tuesday.

“I’m pleased to have Chief Johnson step into this role in our Police Department,” City Manager Seth Perrins said in a press release. “He is a proven leader in our department and is well-respected by his peers, the community, and our elected officials. Matt has developed himself personally and professionally throughout his career and will continue to elevate and lead our police department.”

Johnson’s law enforcement career began in 1995 in Mapleton. After short stays with Mapleton and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson was hired by Spanish Fork in 1997. He has served as both a patrol and a SWAT officer.

In 2004, Johnson was transferred to the Investigations Division and served as a detective. During this time, he also served as a school resource officer, vocational law enforcement instructor for high school students. Additionally, Johnson was the department liaison with Nebo School District.

During his time in the Investigations Division, Johnson served as a member of the task force investigating Internet Crimes against Children. For his work, he received a letter of commendation from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for his involvement with the task force.

Period of promotions

Johnson was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2008. He served as chairman of the Utah County Safety Task Force. In this role, he administered funds for DUI and seat belt enforcement throughout the county.

In 2012, Johnson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. During this role, he served as the administrative services commander and investigations lieutenant. 

Johnson earned master’s degree in public administration from Brigham Young University. He has also served as an adjunct professor in the criminal justice program at the University of Phoenix.

Johnson takes over as Spanish Fork police chief for Chief Steven G. Adams who served in the position for the previous 11 years.
