Utah’s Hogle Zoo celebrates 46th birthday of George, the rhinoceros

SALT LAKE CITY — George, a male southern white rhinoceros, celebrated his 46th birthday this week at Utah’s Hogle Zoo.
On Thursday, the zoo announced George is the oldest male southern white rhinoceros within The Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
George has more than doubled the life expectancy of a rhinoceros. Typically, rhinoceros live to be about 20, according to a Facebook posting from Utah’s Hogle Zoo.
According to the zoo, there are about 18,000 to 19,000 southern white rhinoceros left in Africa.
The zoo also states that rhinoceros shape their horns. It’s based on personal preference. It’s much like how humans have either long or short hair.
He arrived at the zoo back in 1978.
