Listening to the radio during 911
Todd Adams
When I was a Cub Scout, our pack got to take a guided tour of KSL. While we were waiting in the hall, Doug Wright came out of the broadcasting booth. Upon learning what we were doing there, he grabbed a hand-held tape recorder and did quick personal interviews with each one of us, asking our names and what we liked about Cub Scouts. He played those interviews on his show a few days later. I even got to stay home from school to hear it!

My Grandpa Richard Bingham was a dedicated Journalist for KSL. Then went to the sister station Kiro in Seattle Washington. He came back to Salt Lake City as a Government Specialist and also did The Prime time Access Show for KSL. He was known as the ( Gentlemen Journalist) On his retirement he was presented the Key to Salt Lake City by the Governors Bangerter and Matheson. He was loved by everyone he worked with and took pride in everything he did!! I had the honor to be his Grand son, listen and will never forget his stories!!!

While living in Houston about 25 years ago, we were traveling to Utah to stay with family for Christmas. As we approached El Paso, Texas, we picked up KSL AM 1160 on the radio. In the 1980s we were living in West Jordan. We had two small children, and I needed a few groceries. My husband agreed to take me to Smith’s to purchase them. BYU football was playing and we were listening on the radio. I left the car to get the groceries because BYU was losing badly. When I returned, BYU had scored a couple of touchdowns. We remained in the parking lot, listening to the game. To our great surprise and shock, they won! Fans all over the parking lot got out of their cars and started jumping up and down! We had no idea they had been listening too. To this day, we still talk about our experience with KSL and the BYU “Miracle Bowl.”

Before we had kids my husband and I would drive around in the evenings and listen to the Nightside project. One evening they were discussing reading and writing in cursive being taught in school or not. This struck up a conversation between my husband and I about national and personal documents from previous centuries and how we felt it was important for children to be able to read and understand those documents in their original form. We decided to text in our thoughts but by the time we hit 'send' they were going to commercial break and moving on to a new topic. As they began their next discussion, one of them stopped and said, "sorry guys, you know I don't usually go back but I want to bring up a perspective from someone who sent us a message" and they read the opinion we had sent in. We were pleasantly surprised and honored that they would take the time to share perspectives from all of even if it was a little late. We fully enjoyed the many hours in the car listening and learning from them and being encouraged to have open conversations about many topics. Thanks for the great service you provide for our community!

One of my favorite KSL NewsRadio experiences would have to be your coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympics held right here in Salt Lake City. If I had to choose just one of the best moments I would have to say it was when the United States Men Swept the Snowboarding Halfpipe event! I was a mailcarrier for 33 years. I took KSL with me every step of the way! I actually listened before I became a mail carrier at my home while I was raising my kids. I always called and entered the contests, I won some I lost some!
But while I was a mailcarrier, it was a difficult job with alot of difficult days, but it was like having a "friend" with me everyday. I stayed informed on all the news of the day, I felt like I knew the different DJ's, like they were my personal friend. I've retired, 2020 did me in, but I still have KSL on whenever I'm in my car or in my kitchen doing the dishes.
KSL made my life alot smoother!

My wife and I were born 100 years ago when KSL first began. As we grew up our favorite shows were "Amos and Andy," and "Mert and Marg<" as the family gathered around the radio to listen. We loved to hear Kate Smith sing patriotic songs like "God Bless America." When KSL was 50 years old, we listened to celebration plans, and my wife, Ina, excitedly entered the "Miss KSL" competition. She didn't win, but we enjoyed the festivities.

Oh my goodness! I grew up listening to KSL, at home, in the car, my parents were always listening. I still listen. That is the station I turn to for traffic and weather reports and anything else that I want an update on.
One of my fun memories…my mom is from Emery/Carbon county. She always explained to us about Helper getting its name from the additional engines the trains hooked up so they could make it through Price Canyon.
Many years ago, one of the on air contests asked the question, “How did the town of Helper get its name?”
I made it through and won with my answer! A proud moment for me, for listening to moms story every time we passed through the canyon and proud moment for my Mom that she taught us a bit of history.
Now my kids and grandkids get to hear the story and about my win, every time we pass through Helper.

I’m 27 and don’t have a recollection of when KSL was not apart of my life. My mom would have it tuned to 1160am every school morning and my siblings and I would groggily sit at the table eating breakfast listening to the morning news. When I got my first job in high school I would turn on the Nightside project for my drive home. My rusting Buick was tuned to Jay and Amy while in waiting to pick my brother up from school. I have since moved from Utah and find a connection to home listening to Greg Wrubell call the game or Doug and Steve put innocent listeners through telephone torture.

One of my favorite memories of KSL was listening to it all the way to a last ditch decision to go to Wendover for the New year with my fiance. We rented a brand new dodge challenger and raced out there. Listening to KSL the whole time because we love listening to the news and traffic. Anyhow we got there and checked into our room by about 10:00 pm and just had time to get dressed and unpacked and ready for the new year! That is one of the most memorable nights listening to KSL all the way, with my fiance Austin being the only other one on that stretch of road I don't believe he was doing the speed limit! Best New year Ever! I had to look hard but found pics from that night! THANKS KSL! We love you!

How KSL chooses to not report on the Obama administration spying on their political opponent. Something much bigger than just a watergate wire tap.
Or how ksl is passes along lame dumb down national reporting where no one asks obviously needed follow up questions. And finds it acceptable to do reports saying "experts say......" without disclosing who these "experts" are or what their role or back ground even is. As if we're supposed to follow along ignorantly because an supposed "expert" said so.
You need to bring back true reporting and not opinions.
Starting to use other news outlets more than ksl.

I have so many fond memories of KSL-- KSL Blue Chip Card Days when I was younger, BYU tailgates as a teen, the 2002 Olympics as a young adult, and my wife and I dropping by for the 90th birthday celebration.
My greatest memories revolve around the Nightside Project. Competing in the "Unofficial Official Nightside Idol" on the "red carpet" outside Broadcast House, calling "Who Asked You?" on Friday nights, going to Seriously Thursday Night at Tucano's on my daughter's 14th birthday, and even stopping by the station on the last evening of Nightside. Perhaps my greatest memory was singing "Carol of the Bells" with my family in studio for "Festival of Carols."

As a teenager growing up in Louisiana, I would listen late at night to clear-channel 1160AM KSL from the Crossroads of the West. The AM skip would come and go, but I remember to this day the late-night jingle intro "Gaylon Rowan, K...S...L...". As I attended college in Idaho and Utah, I enjoyed Danny Kramer's positive uplifting voice. He was a must-listen-to part of each and every weekday. KSL Memories
Growing up in Southern California, I spent many happy summer vacations with cousins in Utah, as both of my parents were from Salt Lake City. Therefore, whenever I could pick up KSL on the radio (listening to distant stations was one of my hobbies), I was reminded of good times with beloved family in the “tops of the mountains.”
After moving to Provo to teach Religion at BYU, we often returned to my boyhood home in Los Angeles. On a Christmas trip there in 1973, I wondered if we would encounter winter weather during our drive back to Utah. This was long before computers and the internet, so my most dependable source was to listen to KSL’s evening news on our car radio. Instead of the expected newscast, however, I heard somber music and soon the announcement that Harold B. Lee had died after serving as Church President for only a year and a half. Hence KSL kept me informed even when I was hundreds of miles away!
A Memory Shared by Another
Dr. LeRoy Hatch served as mission president in Mexico City. He discovered that in a certain hilltop location just outside of the city, he could often pick up KSL at night. He and a group of elders would drive there to enjoy broadcasts of BYU sports, which for many of them was a welcome link with home.

You used to have music before you became only a talk station. I miss the music. In fact, way back before I was born when my mother was a teenager and maybe even a student at the U of U in the late 1920s and early 1930s, she used to get phone calls from KSL to come fill empty time slots and play her cello as a solo! I also remember standing in line to get a KSL anniversary edition cassette tape that was being given out in front of ZCMI on South Temple Street probably in the 1980s. The Doug Wright Show was my favorite! Do you know that sometimes I was able to listen to snippets of KSL Radio on Saturday evenings in Yucaipa, California, (southern CA) in my bedroom on my radio during the later 1960s? It was incredible and wonderful!

It must have been 60 years ago when I was a pretty young child, that KSL radio had a contest which I think was called the Sugar Bowl. There was a certain amount of money in the contest sugar bowl, and if you knew the amount when they called you, you won the money. Every morning my Dad took his transistor radio out to the barnyard with him and listened to KSL while he milked the cow. When he came in, he wrote the amount of money in the sugar bowl on a slip of paper and put it by the phone just in case we received the call. Then he changed into his suit and traveled to Salt Lake City to work. It’s pleasant to remember Daddy coming in the back door with rosy cheeks on a frosty morning, full of anticipation that KSL might call us and we might win the Sugar Bowl! (P.S. I’m sure he also made comments about the news of the day as involved as he was with current events, but to me, the Sugar Bowl captured my imagination and eclipsed any other possible news!)

In January 1977 my dog and I drove to Utah from the suburbs of Washington, D.C. to set up residence in Utah so the family could follow. On the way down Parley's Canyon, I tuned in the radio and since KSL was such a strong station, I picked it up. It was Danny Crammer's show and the Primary Children's radiothon was in progress. It struck me as so unusual that the names of the youth groups in the LDS church (Beehives, Deacons, etc.) were used as though everyone knew what they were. I've been a listener ever since that which was 45 years ago.
A couple or so years later, again on Danny's show, he was talking about Davey Crockett and asked if anyone knew his theme song. I called in and he made me sing it. I'm not much of a singer, but he made me feel comfortable first. He told me that millions of people were listening all over the west!!
Thanx for all the years of entertainment and news and talk. Love KSL.

My favorite memory with KSL News Radio is listening to my authors and artists I scheduled all the years that Doug Wright and I spent developing, planning, and maintaining “Everyday Lives, Everyday Values,” a Sunday morning broadcast turned podcast sponsored by Deseret Book. Doug was the host, but I planned and scheduled each guest for Deseret Book for taping the broadcast: book authors, music artist, illustrators, and so on. Back in the early 1990s, when we started the sponsorship and developed the show, it had the 9-9:30 AM time slot, airing right before “Music and the Spoken Word.” The program kept going for years after I left Deseret Book in 2000 and eventually became a podcast from what I understand. Whenever I called into Doug’s regular radio shows, he always had the producer put me through, and we’d quickly reconnect, say our “hellos and how are yous,” and go on with my comment or question.

Back in the last month of 2019 Ksl was doing a 1000 dollar saving giveaway thing. You listen in at 10:40 and then they have you be caller number 5 and asked a question. If answered right you would win the 1000 dollars. I tried the entire time everyday listening and calling and trying so hard to win that money.
Well it got down to the last few days. I have been answered but been caller 1 4 3 4 1 and nothing. It was the last day. My last chance. I remember pulling off the road from work just to listen and write notes. It was finally time to call in. So I called and called and called. And finally an ring. With hopes so high I remember thinking I hope I’m it. I hope my turn has come. Finally an answer. And instead of hearing caller number something try again I heard a hello. I finally got threw. My dad taught at BYU for over 40 years. During my years as a BYU student I would carpool to BYU from Orem with him and my sister. I have so many memories of the three of us sitting across the seat of his small pickup truck, listening to the morning news on KSL, his favorite radio station. My sister and I would beg to listen to music (we weren’t quite old enough to appreciate KSL at the time), but it was always KSL when we were in the car with my dad. Even now, every time I hear Amanda Dixon’s voice I can’t help but think fondly of my dad and those early morning drives to BYU.
I find myself in my dad’s shoes now - I listen to KSL as I drive my kids to school while they beg to listen to music. But I am confident the day will come that they will turn on KSL as they drive their own kids to school, and I hope they think of me when they do. Thank you KSL for all the memories!!!

I'm mostly a morning listener. Been listening to KSL on a daily basis since I moved to Utah in February of 1987. Most of my memories include Grant & Amanda, and Doug Wright. I remember Amanda talking about Mike Wallace one time, and how he said he still had natural black hair. Amanda made the comment how she didn't know if she believed that. This was back in the day when you could e-mail your comments to the radio show. I e-mailed her and told her that my father was in his 80's and still had a full head of black hair - and none of his brothers or sisters had any grey hair either. I told her I was in my 50's and so far so good. She e-mailed me back and congratulated my dad on having youthful genes and wished me the same.

My relationship with KSL radio started back with Rex Campbell and the news. My parents were educators and every morning we got up and started the day with his broadcast. I think my all time memory of KSL is when Doug Wright broke all the legislative rules (with my assistance) and KSL broadcast Doug's show live from my Senate Office. Truly the fourth branch of government brought the light of day to the citizens of the State of Utah on how legislation was made. How can I ever forget Bob Lee when he would have me on his show as one of the few democrats and we would spar about politics. Back in the day Bob was the Rush Limbaugh of today. But my all time memory of KSL radio is when I debated Orrin Hatch challenging him for the US Senate. Doug Wright was the host and during commercial time Orrin told Doug and I so many stories of what happens in Washington which was completely contrary to what he was stating in the debate. I think Doug and I laughed so hard when Doug came back on the radio and said "I only wish all of you listeners could have heard what Scott and Orrin were talking about during the commercial. It probably would have changed your vote". All my memories of KSL and their great work and excellent leaders bring a smile on my face. What a privilege it was to be a part of the greatest most powerful radio station in the West.

On February 4, 1976, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Guatemala. My sister was serving health services mission at the time.
With all of the infrastructure in shambles, there was no way for her to get news to us regarding her health and Safety.
The CBS evening news with Walter Cronkite aired a story of the devastation. Their local reporters interviewed two Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; Cathy Hyer and Jeraldine Pullham.
We missed the 5 O Clock news, but Dick Nourse, long-time KSL anchorman had his assistant call my parents, who lived in western Idaho at the time, to let them know of the broadcast.
Since we were not in the KSL viewing area he suggested that we contact the KSL affiliate in Boise and request that they run the story again at 10:00.
Through their thoughtfulness, we had the peace of mind of seeing Cathy on the news and were comforted as to her safety.

In 2016 I emailed KSL Radio explaining how my 15 year old son, Dallin Jenson, had been a fan of the Doug Wright movie show. Years before when the final Harry Potter movie came out he called in to voice his opinion. He was the "young caller" from Logan. Dallin was so inspired by the show that he started to review movies on a Youtube channel. In my email I asked if my passionate 15 year old could possibly visit and observe the show.
Kelsey Witt responded that not only could he visit the show, but that they would have him help review a movie. On Friday, May 27th, Dallin was able to review Angry Birds, a new release that had just come out. As a young boy, my father and I would get close to our radio and listen to BYU basketball games. Our radio had a wire running from it under a window and out to a tree. We could only hear KSL at night time and sometimes there was a lot of static. It was in the early 1950's when I think it was Dean Bennett calling the plays and Stan Watts was the coach. We had to listen very carefully and be very close to the radio to be able to hear the game. Great memories that led me to attend BYU and listen to Public Pulse with Wes Bowen in the evenings as a teenager.

During the early 1930s - Nephi, Utah
I don’t know how old I was when Daddy brought home a new piece of furniture; it looked like a brown wooden box with some pieces of yellow fabric covered by a few slats of wood. Right in the middle were two knobs, above which was one big yellow eye. This eye would change wide or narrow as
Daddy turned the right knob. Around this eye was a rectangle face with numbers on it and one big arrow like I had seen on a clock. Daddy told us that this box would talk to us from Salt Lake and the knobs and the eye would control what we would hear. This new box was called a radio.
Daddy turned one of the knobs. The arrow moved, the yellow eye narrowed a bit, and the arrow pointed to “1160”. He said that if we dialed KSL, we would be able to listen to General Conference from the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. We would be able to hear our Prophet, Heber J Grant, all the Twelve Apostles and the Assistants to the Twelve. We would also hear the Tabernacle Choir. My preschool mind thought it was magic as they talked about Joseph Smith. We listened for three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Every Sunday morning, we would listen to “Music and the Spoken Word” with the Tabernacle Choir and Richard L. Evans.
On Saturday mornings it was our day to help clean house. We busily dusted and vacuumed while we listened and visualized in our minds, the Fairy Tales of “Let’s Pretend” which came on at nine o’clock, “Inner Sanctum Mystery” next, and “Lux Radio Theater,” broadcast at ten o’clock.
On weekdays we started our day with “Leonard Friendly” at the organ. He played a half hour recital every morning. He must have broadcast at about 8:00 because mother would say, “OK, it is time to go to school now,” as he finished his music. That was our signal to leave for school.
My young mind was fascinated “occasionally” by afternoon soap operas. I remember Kitty Foyle; I also remember hearing a statement, “Life is swell, when you keep well.”

One very tragic, vivid moment in my memory was Sunday Dec. 7, 1941. President Roosevelt announced that United States was in war. Japanese airplanes had bombed Pearl Harbor on the coast of Hawaii. Germany had been aggressively fighting through Europe threatening to conquer the world; it was time to defend ourselves. Our world changed; we listened regularly to KSL to find any information about this new war. There was a new kind of fear, we depended on broadcasting to learn the latest that we could. We did celebrate as KSL kept us aware of Americas victorious moves in both the Pacific and European front. How we celebrated when we learned that we could really win this war.

Larry said he had to put on his family counselor hat to address this question, then went on to give me some advice. A while later my husband came home. My favorite memory is tuning into KSL just before sunrise when I was a young boy growing up in Wichita, Kansas (yes the signal reaches that far during the night-time. It was fun to dream of Utah-- and I dreamed I would someday travel to UTAH. . when I was age 9, I went with my parents to Utah on the first of many trips. And as an adult I have driven Interstate I-80 and listened to KSL in many States and even talked to Doug Wright many times when he hosted his Show. Best of all, I have talked to Governors Huntsman, Herbert and Cox on KSL radio -- and now with my laptop, I can enjoy the programming any time of day. My congratulations to KSL Radio on turning 100 !!!

While a teenager in Modesto, California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was really taken with radio. I worked on my high school's 10-watt station (KDHS), loved listening to shortwave broadcasts, and thought it neat to be able to pick up distant radio stations late at night while babysitting or just listening to my transistor radio in bed. From California's San Joaquin Valley, I could pick up KOMO (Seattle), KOA (Denver), KOB (Albuquerque), XERB (Tijuana), and, of course, KSL .
I especially enjoyed listening to Herb Jepko's Nightcap Club. I was amazed at how he could remember details about some of his callers who, presumably, had called in on previous occasions and the personal, friendly, and familiar way he had with everyone.
Less than a year ago, my wife and I retired to the Great Salt Lake Valley. I listen to KSL regularly.

When I was a pre-teen boy in the 1950s I lived in a small town in Oregon. My parents let me have a hand-me-down radio receiver on my bedside table. There was only one local radio station in our town, KODL The Dalles Oregon. This station played popular music of the day but their broadcast shut down at 10:00 PM each evening. Later at night I would listen to clear-channel stations in the western US. I most often listened to KSL which had the Wes Bowen jazz music program at that time. What a revelation it was to be introduced to music beyond the pop music of the day. I still listen to KSL from my current home in Payson Arizona. I especially like the weekend late night "When Radio Was" and the early morning "Bloomberg business" programming. ---Gary M.

April 1st, 1994 was the day. There was a contest on the morning show which Grant and Amanda hosted at the time. You had to be the 11th caller to win; I happened to be the lucky caller!! First, I could hardly believe I had gotten through. Second, I thought the winner for the day (seems like this contest ran for more than day) was going to be put in for a drawing to win a trip for 4 to Disneyland, which was NOT the case. Grant and Amanda had to convince me that I had actually won a trip. Third, I had a hard time convincing family, friends, and co-workers that I had won since they all thought it was an April Fool’s joke! The trip was fabulous-it included flights, transfer to the Disneyland hotel, 3 days admission into the park, food coupons, meals with Disney characters…the whole works. Thank you KSL radio for all you do.

In the 80s...
1160am was one of the few stations that my clock radio could pick out with any measure of clarity. News and talk radio are not terribly engaging for an 8 to 10 year old, but one evening on our way home, my father tuned in to 1160am in the car around 8pm (if memory serves). I heard the eerie strains of an organ, and then a cackle. "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?....The Shadow knows!"
And I was hooked. I devotedly tuned in every evening I could to listen to syndicated old radio dramas being played on KSL 1160am. Of course my favorite was the stories of the Shadow, who was "...really Lamont Crantston, wealthy young man about town". I thrilled to the Shadow, Twilight Zone, and the Lone Ranger. Came to appreciate humor with Abbot and Costello, Amos 'n' Andy, Jack Benny, and Red Skelton. I was an hour early the Halloween night that KSL re-played the Mercury Theater on the Air's dramatization of "The War of the Worlds", which I recorded and listened to until I wore out the tape, and memorized it.
My fascination with radio brought me to DJ as "Beam me up Scotty" for KKiDS "the Imagination station" which was right next to KSL at 1060am on the dial here in Utah between 1989 and 1993 (If I'm remembering correctly). They said that I wasn't supposed to work the board because I was too young, but I couldn't help myself, and took phone request and played carts.
Later in college, my memories of KSL were alive and well as I announced for Utah Public Radio "A service of Utah State University KUSU FM 91.5, and KUSR 89.5 in Logan Utah".
And when I was finally hired by KSL to work crew for the morning TV news cast. During my breaks I would meander past the studios over in the south east corner of the station, and there would be Tim and Amanda, and Andy working the mics, and having a great time. I was a little envious to say the least, but it was fun to be part of that family and working so close.
Since then, KSL News Raido has been well worn into all the dials of all the cars that I've driven. I was delighted when you recently debuted "A City Sidewalk Christmas", and I hope that such productions become a holiday tradition at the station.
Because of these experiences with KSL at their heart, I've amassed a huge library of Old Radio Dramas and done all I can to familiarize my children with that theater you visit in your mind which was opened for me in my formative years by KSL 1160am.
Thanks for all the years of professional broadcasting. It is a pleasure to listen.

I have a number of favorite memories. The first was listening to Mystery Theater on the way home from visiting Grandma's house. If we got home before the show was over, we would sit in the car and listen until it was over. My second memory was listening to John Berg and the Garden Show. Our family used a number of the useful tips. After he left, we didn't really like the Garden Show as much. The last memory was about 20 years ago. I was carpooling into work with a friend and they always wanted to listen to KSL on the way to work. I told my friend that Amanda was just TOO cheerful for that time in the morning and had to be a fake. My friend asked me to listen for just 1 week and then decide. I was a teenager back in the 90’s. I remember so many times riding in the car while my dad was driving, feeling so annoyed, because he was listening to KSL News Radio. I could not even fathom why anyone would want to listen to talk radio instead of music! My dad didn’t listen to it at a normal level either. The volume was so extremely loud because despite his hearing aids, he struggled hearing at normal levels. So when he was driving, we had the talk radio blaring! I remember a specific time when he was driving me and a roommate back up to Utah State, and for some reason we were taking the long way of going on Highway 89 from Bountiful (probably because of an accident that he was alerted to on the radio). I felt so embarrassed that we had to listen to talk radio the whole way to Logan, with my friend sitting in the back seat. There was so much noise already in the car, there was no reason to try to carry on a conversation. I remember asking him if we could listen to some music instead and I think that at some point he changed the station.
Fast forward almost 30 years and I’m an adult now, and I’m in much of the same life circumstances that my dad was in back then, despite the hearing, thank goodness! I am married and have three children of my own. I listen to KSL Talk Radio almost every day. I listen to it in the morning while I’m getting ready and throughout the day when I’m driving in my car. I often think back about the times that I was so annoyed with my dad listening to the same thing that I now listen to, and I feel gratitude. Gratitude for the memories. My dad died not too many years after that time driving me back up to college. He died too young at the age of 50. I like to think that my current family is in about the same times of life that my family that I came from was in back then. Life can get complicated but looking back and seeing the similarities of me and him makes me smile and so grateful for the memories.

In the 2010s when scads of "Old Time Radio" programs started appearing in archives on The Web, I became interested in a CBS radio drama series that I had never heard of -- "Yours Truly Johnny Dollar." Supposedly either it or "Suspense" was the last surviving radio drama in 1962. It was about -- and I paraphrase -- "America's fabulous free-lance insurance investigator, the man with the action-packed expense account." No kidding. The last three seasons had a great musical score and, in my view, a fantastic theme score. I had not heard of the series, but the music was utterly familiar to me. I likely heard it on KSL Radio in the early 1960a when I was a kidlet and then remembered it decades later in the 2010s.
[CONFIDENTIAL ASIDE -- I would be interested in communicating / talking with the producer of the 100th anniversary celebration. How much of the day-long 60th anniversary broadcast, 6 May 1982, did KSL officially record and archive to this day? I have several cassette tapes of the interviews that day. It was very historic broadcasting, given the various then-still-living figures associated with Bonneville and KSL that appeared before the microphones.]

Whether Doug Wright, Taun of the greenhouse show, Dave and Debbie, or any of the other hosts over the years- all of them have shaped a little of who I am. The most poignant moment, however, was the first time I heard Boyd say something like, “fake fights and false choices; we need to change the conversation.” I’ve used this many times in various conversations to “elevate” the conversation and dive at the heart of what the real issues are in government. It helps me communicate in very simple terms what I’ve been feeling for years before- especially when politics has been such a hot button issue the last few years.
