Saratoga Springs temple location, plans announced

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the location of its Saratoga Springs temple will be in the new Beacon Pointe subdivision, just off Redwood Rd.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has filed plans with the city of Saratoga Springs for a temple to be built in the Beacon Pointe subdivision.

The temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson in April, 2017. Specific design plans are still in the works, and the Church has not yet announced a groundbreaking date.

According to the filed plans, the Saratoga Springs temple is expected to be a three-story structure with 87,000 square feet inside. An adjacent meeting house would be another 21,000 square feet.

The temple will be located just west of Redwood Road and just north of Meadow Side Drive.

It will be the 18th Latter-day Saint temple in Utah and the fifth in Utah County, following the Provo Temple, the Mount Timpanogos Temple, the Payson Temple, and the Provo City Center Temple.

Three more temples have been announced for Utah since the Saratoga Springs Temple was announced in April, 2017. Those are planned for Layton, Washington County, and Tooele Valley.

Beacon Point is a new development according to Saratoga Springs Mayor Jim Miller. He says part of the reason it took a while to know the exact location is because the Church has been working on master planning an entire neighborhood that would include a temple site.

“So it has taken them some time to design roads, sewer, water, power,” Miller says. “Get everything implemented into that area so that they can submit an application to the city.

“It’s finally here, they’ve done it right, they’ve followed due process, and it takes time to master plan a community.”

Miller says in West Lehi, Saratoga Springs, and Eagle Mountain there are over 100,000 people, so this will serve a wide number of people in the area.

“The excitement of the temple has sparked some of our business growth,” Miller said. “It’s sparked some of the other things people have wanted. So it’s been a great thing to draw people to the area.”

Currently around the world, the Church has 163 dedicated temples, 14 under construction, and 32 announced for a total of 209.

President Monson also announced temples for Brasília, Brazil; greater Manila, Philippines, area; Nairobi, Kenya; and Pocatello, Idaho on the same day as Saratoga Springs. The others are still in the planning stages, except for Pocatello, which had a groundbreaking in March.
