EMIGRATION CANYON, UTAH — The people who live in Emigration Canyon are getting some unexpected help filling sandbags from a pair of missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Elder Brandon Newbrough and his companion Elder Taylor Sorensen were on the side of the canyon road mid-morning Wednesday. They say they come fill sandbags daily simply to serve the people in the area.

They leave the sandbags on the side of the road, then come back the next day and fill some more.

“It doesn’t matter how many we fill, every time we come back they’re always gone,” said Elder Newbrough. “So, we make sure to come out as often as possible because there’s clearly still a need.”

The pair of missionaries had to get special permission for their daily service.

“We asked our mission president, he said we could come out here for an hour every day.”

Missionaries are typically allowed to serve, but daily service requires extra approval.

The pair says it feels good to help people, even if they’ll never know who’s benefiting.
