UTAH GIVES BACK

Sound Beginnings

There is a complex relationship between a child’s hearing, communication, and overall development. A child that may appear to have a developmental delay could actually have a hearing impairment. If it goes undiagnosed, it could lead to delays in development and communication. For parents, all of this can seem like a puzzle they can’t solve.

Helping to put the pieces together are experts from Sound Beginnings at Utah State University. Sound Beginnings is an early childhood education program that provides services to children with hearing loss whose families want them to learn to listen and talk. Congenital hearing loss is one of the country’s most frequent birth defects, and many children with hearing loss lag behind their peers.

Sound Beginnings provides a collaborative approach to learning, including hearing tests and treatment; speech therapy, home visits, toddler groups, and preschool.
Children who graduate from the program go on to be successful in their mainstream neighborhood schools and communities.

SelectHealth recognizes the innovative methods of Sound Beginnings as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
