SANDY — The Utah Division of Drinking Water has ordered a shutdown of the Sandy City water plant that was the source of water contamination in February.
The closure of the Paradise Valley Fluoridation Facility will allow investigations to continue into how Sandy City’s water became contaminated with elevated levels of fluoride, copper, iron, arsenic, aluminum, and manganese.
The state is requiring Sandy City to test the water about thirty times more than other cities do.
The water plant will stay closed until the Utah Division of Drinking Water gives its approval.
The water was classified as undrinkable in an area of Sandy City from February 16 to February 17. Residents began reporting on Feb. 6 that their water was causing sickness.
