WASHINGTON DC – During a debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, a representative used a less-preferred name of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A Utah representative quickly informed his colleague of recent changes.
The House was in the midst of debating a resolution to condemn hate speech when Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) made a reference to “mormons.”
Rep. Collins was saying that the resolution condemned anti-Muslim discrimination and bigotry, but the resolution did not expressly include all religious groups.
In his remarks he said, “Why didn’t we add Mormons?”
While Rep. Collins still spoke on the floor, Utah representative Rob Bishop then sent an email to Rep. Collins to tell him that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are not called “mormons” anymore.
Rep. Collins corrected himself on the next reference to members of the Church.
