SALT LAKE CITY — One of the people killed in an airplane crash that happened in Logan County, Illinois, has been identified as a graduate researcher from Utah State University.
WAND-TV reports that three people were killed Tuesday afternoon when the single-engine Cessna 172 crashed on I-55 near Lincoln, Illinois.
WAND reports that before the airplane crashed it had already caught fire and that it was fully engulfed in flames before hitting the ground.
Illinois State Police identified the victims on Wednesday morning. The pilot of the aircraft was 22-year-old Mitchell W. Janssen. The other two people in the plane were passengers 33-year old Matthew R. Hanson, and 30-year-old Kevin G. Chapman.
According to his biography on the U.S. Geological Survey webpage, the USU graduate researcher Kevin Chapman was working toward a Masters in Ecology through the Watershed Sciences Department.
The National Transportation Safety Bureau says no flight path was submitted before the plane took off from Bloomington, Illinois.
An investigation is expected to continue through at least Thursday.
