Taylorsville–An officer-involved shooting leaves one man dead in Taylorsville after a foot chase early this morning that ended in a back yard.

According to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray the incident started when police responded to reports of shots fired at 3:20 a.m. in the area northeast of 6200 South and 3200 West.

Unified Police officers in Kerns had received information that a vehicle was seen leaving the area was headed west on 6200 South.

Gray said that a few minutes later officers observed a vehicle that they said was suspicious and began following that vehicle.

The officers initiated a traffic stop at which point the vehicle fled.

Gray reported that the officers did not pursue the vehicle but saw it turn southbound onto 3200 West.

As the officers came around the corner they saw that the vehicle had stopped after it hit a street sign.

The driver of that vehicle got out of the vehicle and began running down the sidewalk, and then jumped a fence,” Gray said.

She said, “Our officers pursued him on foot and over that fence in the back yard of a home.”

At that point, shots were fired and one male person is deceased.
