EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — A man was airlifted to the hospital Sunday morning after he was struck by lightning in Eagle Mountain. He is expected to survive.

The man was knocked unconscious after the lightning struck directly behind him around 10 a.m. while walking on a trail near Orrin Circle, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon. His wife was with him at the time, said she was “also impacted but not seriously,” according to her Twitter page.

Cannon said the man regained consciousness and was talking, but was having trouble moving. There was a couple nearby that saw the lightning strike behind him.

“There was some serious concern for him,” Cannon said to KSL.com. “To say he’s lucky to be alive is probably an understatement.”

The lightning was part of the severe thunderstorm warnings disrupting much of the state over the weekend — which had already caused property damage and power outages across the valley.
