SALT LAKE CITY  —  The Salt Lake Police Department has identified the man who was shot this morning at the Echo nightclub as 27-year-old Gustav Denecamp.

Denecamp was shot around 1:30 a.m.  Salt Lake City police Lt. Brett Olsen says Denecamp decided to go get a gun, then returned to the club in a side door.  Olsen says Denecamp then started shooting the gun inside the club.

“At one point, another person who was there, an employee who had his own gun saw it and shot him,” said Olsen.

A short time later, the man stumbled out of the Echo nightclub and died.  Officers on scene had attempted life-saving measures, says Olsen, but those attempts failed.

Olsen says as of early Saturday morning no motive for the initial shooting is known as officers continue the investigation.  Olsen says no one else in the club was hurt, but an officer tending to the man who was shot was himself assaulted.

“A couple of bystanders who interfered with police assaulted one of the officers at one point, and were taken to jail on a separate incident,” says Olsen.

The investigation is still in progress.
