Starting succulents from cuttings can be a fun activity for experimental gardeners. Sheriden Hansen with USU Extension joined the KSL Greenhouse Show to give us insight on starting succulents from cuttings.
Sheriden Hansen explains It’s really easy to do as we are all experimental gardens.
“If you’ve got a succulent that has stretched or elongated or is is old… at the very end of that stem will still be a rosette,” Hansen explained.
“Everyone of these leaves will get new roots coming out, essentially sending out a whole new root system,” said Hansen
Sheridan explained you can start succulents from all of the leaves you stripped as well.
If you choose to use the leaves, lay them in a tray with soil and you can water it every 7-10 days and you will see roots starts to form.
It is important to have patience during this process.
“You are going to have faster results with the stem cutting, where the leaf cutting takes a bit more time,” Hansen Explained
“Know that there is a rate of failure and it is not your failure, it is just that the plant doesn’t have the need or the means to produce,” Sheriden Hanses stated.
