SANDY, Utah — We’ve reached a milestone for Utah’s schools. State leaders gathered to mark the last COVID-19 vaccine clinic for the Canyons School District Thursday night where the final 300 doses were given to staff in the district.

That means all teachers and staff within the Canyons District have been vaccinated.

The district said that cheers erupted at the clinic at Mount Jordan Middle as the last vaccines were distributed.

“Utah schools have done so much to keep our kids safe and keep our kids in schools.  The vaccinations also are a part of that,” Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson said to those gathered.

“We can see the finish line and that is the exciting thing. For a year, we have been playing defense and now we can finally play offense,” she continued.

“The thing that I have seen in vaccination clinics that I have visited, including this one, is that there is an emotional thread, a thread of hope — a hope to see their families again, a hope to get back to doing things that we did before … This is what gives people hope.”

Most eligible Canyons District staff receive the vaccine

The district said, in total, 73% of their eligible staff chose to receive the vaccine, including 91% of administrators and 83% of their licensed staff.

“I am so overwhelmed with pride and appreciation for our employees. The way they have stepped up to be vaccinated and a part of this,  it is an honor to be their teammate,” Canyons Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins said. “Their spirit and their attitude to keep our kids in school and really fulfill our promise to our kids.”

“They say that it takes a village to raise a child. Schools are certainly a part of that village, and it takes everyone, from teachers to custodians to secretaries to bus drivers, to make sure every student is provided a world-class education in Canyons District.”
