BOULDER, Colorado — The city of Boulder is slowly recovering after the March 22 mass shooting. The shooting occurred at a Colorado supermarket and killed 10 people, including a police officer.

According to the Associated Press, those who lost their lives at the King Soopers store in Boulder ranged from 20 years old to 65. They included a magazine photographer, a Medicare agent with a passion for theater and others going about their day at a busy shopping plaza.

Boulder King Soopers to be rebuilt

King Soopers is continuing to provide support to its employees and plans to restore the building where the attack took place. At a briefing Wednesday, Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver said this announcement will help the community in recovering from the mass shooting.

Colorado’s Channel 9 News, reported Jessica Trowbridge, corporate affairs manager for King Soopers, said the company is working with the city to expedite the redesigning and opening of the store. Currently, the reopening is set to happen in the late fall.

“Reestablishing this store which provides sustenance, services and a hub for our community will be a great blessing to Boulder and I want to thank King Soopers for their partnership,” Weaver said.

“BOULDER STRONG” memorial

In the beginning, the city created an opportunity to safely mourn in a difficult time. For 10 nights – one night to honor each victim and the loved ones left behind – the Boulder community stepped outside to take 10 slow breaths, followed by 10 minutes of silence.

On Wednesday Kroger announced official plans to restore the King Soopers grocery store. In the briefing, city leaders and Deputy City Manager Chris Meschuk announced they’re working on plans for a permanent “BOULDER STRONG” memorial.

“Thoughtful consideration and input from those impacted by the tragedy as well as the broader community will be a core component of the process,” Meschuk said.

This memorial would honor the victims of the shooting across the street from the King Soopers store.

Meschuk believes the process of building the memorial could take several years and an exact location is still undecided.
