SALT LAKE CITY — At the end of a chaotic school year last spring, Granite School District had about 18% of its students still doing remote learning.
As the 2021-22 school year begins, district spokesperson Ben Horsley says he expects 3% to 5% of Granite students to enroll in online learning programs. He doesn’t expect to see a significant increase based on the controversy over recommended mask-wearing in public schools.
“While we haven’t seen a bump based on the political climate and issues that have come up in the past week, it looks like we’re going to maintain that estimate of three to five percent of our students,” Horsley told KSL NewsRadio.
Over the past year, the districts have developed dedicated school programs for online learning. One big advantage of the new system: teachers will work either with online students or those in classrooms — but not both. Horsley says it’s best if students stick to the option they’ve chosen, at least to begin with.
“We’re trying to be as flexible as we can. Obviously, we’re hoping parents will hold fast to their decision through the quarters and only switch at that time because there are some staffing issues we have to deal with as result.”
