PROVO, Utah — The University of Utah will be looking for its 10th straight win over BYU when the two in-state rivals collide on the football field at LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m.

Saturday night’s game will be the first between the rivals since 2019 when Utah won 30-12. Last year’s scheduled game was wiped out due to COVID-19. BYU announced Thursday that the game is sold out.

Inside the numbers

The Utes have won the last nine meetings by an average margin of 10.55 points per contest. During the Utah winning streak, seven of the nine wins by the Utes have been decided by eight points or less. Utah won by a single point in 2010 and 2016.

In all, the Utes have 14 of the last 18 matchups between the two teams, dating back to 2001. BYU’s last win in the series came in 2009 as the Cougars won 26-23 in overtime.

“The only thing in the past is the past, and we look forward,” BYU sophomore quarterback Jaren Hall said in last Monday’s media availability. “For us now, it’s just looking forward to this next game. That’s what we can control. We can’t change the outcome of the past, but we can prepare our best for Saturday and that’s what we’re going to do.”

What the future holds for BYU-Utah football

After Saturday, the two teams won’t play again until 2024. The Utes will play a home-and-home series with the University of Florida in 2022 and 2023. BYU will begin competition in the Big 12 in the 2023-24 academic year. There is no telling what the BYU football schedule will look like then. The Cougars will likely play a eight- or nine-game Big 12 Conference schedule.

A win for the record books

Both teams have won nine straight games in the series. Utah has done it twice – 1929 to 1937 and 2010 to present. BYU won nine straight from 1979 to 1987. A win by the Utes on Saturday night would give them claim to the longest streak in the series.

Mask wearing

Masks are not required be worn outside at LaVell Edwards Stadium. They are however, encouraged and recommended.
