LAYTON — A 15-year-old Layton High School student was hit by two cars Tuesday morning near the school. Police say it happened around 7:00 a.m.

The auto-pedestrian accident took place on Wasatch Drive near Layton High School. Police say the student was taken to the hospital in serious condition for treatment of her injuries.

Layton Lt. Riley Richins says the driver of the first car jumped out to help before she was hit again.

“The driver got out and attended to the victim. While that was happening, another car that was back a few vehicles struck the victim as well for a second time,” says Lt. Richins.

It’s unclear if the student was using a crosswalk at the time of the accident. Police do not believe speed was a factor. Instead, they say the conditions were probably to blame.

“Visibility is huge this morning with [it] not only being dark, but with the rain,” he explains.

As a result of the accident, Northbound Wasatch Drive was closed for a few hours.

One of multiple auto-pedestrian accidents

There has been a string of recent auto-pedestrian accidents in Utah. This incident in Layton is the third in the last week.

A 13-year-old boy died Monday after he and a friend were hit in Taylorsville Saturday night. A 66-year-old man was hit and killed Saturday morning.

Lt. Richins cautions drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions, and pay better attention in the rain and darkness. He says pedestrians need to be extra careful, too.

He says, “Understand that the drivers and vehicles can’t always see you.”
