TOOELE, Utah — The Tooele County School District Board of Education announced Friday the appointment of Dr. Mark Ernst as the new superintendent of the school district. Depending on contract negotiations, he will begin his new role on July 1.
He currently is serving as the district’s interim superintendent. In all, Ernst has been in education for 18 years. He has previously served as the Grantsville Area Director for four years. Ernst has also served as a secondary principal for nine years and taught history for four years.
“We are excited to have Dr. Ernst as our new Tooele County School District superintendent,” said Board of Education President Melissa Rich. “This was a difficult process. The board interviewed four great candidates, but Mark stood out as the top candidate. ”
The other three candidates that were interviewed were the following:
- Joseph Farnsworth, Trinity University director of School Design and Leadership, San Antonio, Texas
- Michael Hale, Bancroft, Idaho SD 149 superintendent, SPED director, Federal Programs director, and K-12 principal, Grace, Idaho.
- David Tanner, Davis School District secondary director, Layton, Utah.
“The opportunity to serve as superintendent of schools for Tooele County School District is humbling,” Ernst said. “We have excellent schools, employees, parents and students. I look forward to continuing our work in providing outstanding educational opportunities for students in Tooele County. ”
