OGDEN, Utah — A 32-year-old Ogden man has been taken into custody in connection to an aggravated kidnapping and homicide case in Alaska from October 2019.

Alaska homicide

Homer, Alaska Police say Kirby Calderwood was arrested Monday following a tip and subsequent investigations. Police also say the Calderwood fled Alaska to Utah after being originally questioned about the case.

According to the probable cause statement, detectives with the Ogden Police Department sought and executed 10 search warrants relating to the homicide investigation in Alaska. As part of the investigation, detectives conducted a traffic stop of Calderwood.

During the traffic stop, detectives discovered a black hard case in the back of the vehicle. The case was similar to ones used to transport weapons, the probable cause statement said. The vehicle he was driving had Idaho license plates. Calderwood never registered the vehicle in Utah after he purchased it.

The probable cause statement says that due to the nature of the case (homicide), detectives only opened the plastic case. Inside the case, a black powder rifle as well as a Marlin rifle that appeared to be a .22 caliber rifle were found, the probable cause statement further states.

No firearms allowed

According to the probable cause statement, Calderwood has been previously charged with aggravated sexual assault under UCMJ (military code). However, there was never a conviction on this charge. Additionally, Calderwood is the subject of a protective order. That order was served on Calderwood in December 2021, and it remains in effect, according to police documents.

The protective order has a no firearms clause. And the probable cause statement says that Calderwood is not allowed to be in possession of firearms at this time.

In the protective order, the individual claimed that Calderwood allegedly raped her on several occasions, according to the probable cause statement. The individual also stated that Calderwood is known to carry weapons.

During a separate search warrant of his residence, police say a manchette and other large knives that appear to have dried blood on them were found. Also, during the search of the residence drug paraphernalia and drugs were found.

The victim

Anesha “Duffy” Murnane, 38, of Homer, Alaska, went missing on Oct. 17, 2019. The Homer Police Department has investigated the case ever since. Police followed up on hundreds of tips and talked to several people.

Calderwood has been booked in the Weber County Jail for investigation of kidnapping, murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree and tampering with physical evidence in the Alaska investigation. He has also been booked for investigation of transaction of a firearm by a restricted person.
