SALT LAKE CITY — Rocky Mountain Power plans to begin construction in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The electric utility company said it wants to mitigate wildfire threats along State Road 190.

Rocky Mountain Power said in a press release this project will replace segments of overhead powerlines along S.R. 190. Underground conduit –which is electrical wiring– and upgrades to the existing system will take the place of the old segments of overhead powerlines.

According to the power company’s website, these upgrades will withstand weather and environmental conditions to better prevent wildfires, protect communities and provide reliable power.

Rocky Mountain Power says to expect delays

Individuals traveling through Big Cottonwood Canyon can expect delays while construction takes place.

Expect:

  • One-way, alternating traffic controlled by flaggers. All travelers, including those on bicycles, must obey flagging operations.
  • Increase in the amount of traffic.
  • Up to 15-minute delays.
  • Potential noise, dust and vibration along the roadway.

“While traveling through work zones, drivers and recreation enthusiasts are advised to adhere to traffic control operations and follow the directions of traffic flaggers,” Rocky Mountain Power said in a press release. “Access to parking at trailheads and picnic areas may be reduced or restricted due to construction impacts.”

Construction crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The project will stretch from the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon to Brighton Resort.

The company anticipates that construction will last through August.
