SALT LAKE CITY — A woman is in extremely critical condition after being struck by a FrontRunner train Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened in the area of 800 South 600 West between the Salt Lake Central and Murray Central stations. According to Carl Arky, a spokesperson for Utah Transit Authority said that couple was standing in front of the gate, and not behind it as they should have been.

Investigators think the woman was watching the Union Pacific line, which runs parallel with the FrontRunner line. Investigators also think she stepped onto the track without realizing the FrontRunner was approaching heading southbound.

Arky isn’t sure if the woman had headphones on and couldn’t hear the train prior to being struck by the FrontRunner.

“It’s one thing to not look, it’s another thing not to hear it,” Arky said. “The train makes a lot of noise.”

A bus bridge was activated between the two stations to help with delays.
