State lawmakers are scrambling to put together a commission now that the third district court placed an injunction on the law preventing trans-athlete girls from competing in school sports.
The commission will determine the fairness of allowing any trans-athlete girls to compete in school sports on a case-by-case basis.
There is concern the commission will not be formed in time for the fall season of sports, Representative Kera Birkeland said, “If they wanted to participate in fall sports the process was in place for them to at least get registered. Because they can play on the team. They can be a part of the team.”
She said the athletes will need to have the commission hearing before they can compete though. When asked the timeline on the formation of the commission, Birkeland said, “The house speaker and the President of the Senate have been working on their appointees for some time now. So, I think that they’ll have some names within the next couple weeks of eligible appointees to the commission.”
