OREM, Utah — October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. A survivors’ shelter in Orem is hosting a domestic violence awareness event Thursday.

The Refuge, a shelter that provides services to women and men who have been either assaulted or feel abused, has housed victims for 36 years.

The event takes place tomorrow, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., starting at the Provo Historic Courthouse, where survivors of domestic violence, including actress Monica Moore Smith, will address the community.

From there, participants will walk by candlelight to Pioneer Park, where there will be food trucks.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the U.S. have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.

Utah is not the only state that struggles to provide enough recourses to keep victims safe.

This event will serve to connect community members experiencing or have survived domestic abuse and expose them to free resources provided by Refuge Utah.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence and needs help call these available resources.
