SALT LAKE CITY — The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is reminding us to rethink how we prepare to go outside during the winter. Now that temperatures have dropped, it’s important to be more mindful of what we wear, eat and drink when adventuring.

Layering your clothing is a great way to maintain warmth. The sheriff’s office said for a base layer to stay away from cotton, and opt for wool and synthetic fabric. Your mid-layer insulating layer, such as a fleece jacket. Lastly, a waterproof and windproof shell to top it off.

As far as food goes, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post to bring calorie-dense snacks that are easy to eat while wearing gloves. Good snack options could include: chocolate, nuts, cheese and salami.

For drinks, pack hot water in an insulated bottle and stay hydrated. Don’t forget that alcohol consumption will dehydrate you. Instead, bring hot chocolate or hot apple cider.

Some other tips from the post include bringing extra layers, you can always take them off, and don’t forget a hat and gloves.
