LEHI, Utah — As the New Year’s Eve celebrations begin fireworks are almost surely to follow.

Fireworks are a great way to ring in the New Year, but it is always good to know how and when to safely use them.

Lehi City Fire Marshall, Garion Rowett, told KSL NewsRadio that it’s important to be smart while using fireworks even when it is cold and snowy.

“The part that never changes is that people like to do silly things with fireworks that they are not designed to do.” Rowett said. “Personal injury is always going to be a hazard that we deal with.”

He goes on to say that during the winter months with snow and lower temperatures they don’t typically get called to tend to grassfires, but it has happened before.

Firework safety tips

Stay safe lighting fireworks by following basic safety guidelines. Garion gave a few tips to KSL NewsRadio. He said first, keep fireworks away from combustibles.

Next, have fireworks anchored well so they go in the right direction. Finally, he said to be aware of what the local firework restrictions are in place.

Most importantly, Rowett said, “Look into your city’s regulations. Understand what may be unique from city to city.”

Most cities throughout Utah do allow fireworks during New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year. However, in some cities and areas, there are restrictions on certain fireworks.

Check what your city is allowing this time of year to have a safe and happy New Year.
