SALT LAKE CITY–The University of Utah is getting $100,000 in grants as part of NBA All-Star Weekend.
The NBA and PepsiCo are each making $50,000 donations to programs for black students on campus.
Meligha Garfield, Director of the University of Utah’s Black Cultural Center, said the NBA’s grant will benefit the center’s Generation Next program, as well as other NBA partnership initiatives.
Further, the other $50,000 will go towards the Black Cultural Center’s Operation S.U.C.C.E.S.S. program.
“This is extremely a big deal,” Garfield said. “It would allow us…to nurture and inspire our students.”
The program allows some students to come up with solutions for issues in the black community, in Utah and elsewhere, and in some cases, students can travel.
“(They) then bring that back home to Utah to work on better crafting programs and initiatives,” Garfield said.
Garfield expressed his gratitude to the NBA Foundation and PepsiCo for helping their programs.
