SALT LAKE CITY – Winter can be a rough time for people to get moving because oftentimes we end up feeling lazy.

In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, host Maria Shilaos spoke with Emily Nelson, CEO and co-owner of High Fitness and fitness expert at Studio 5 KSL, about ways you can motivate yourself to break out of the cycle of laziness.

Feeling lazy is very normal and shouldn’t be shamed upon. That’s why Nelson says the first thing you should do is honor those feelings.

The next step is to make a game plan. She recommends having an accountability partner who can help you feel less alone and more motivated.

There are so many people who feel immense pressure from society to be more active. Nelson thinks we need to drop that shame and guilt.

“You’re never going to be consistent in exercise unless you find something you enjoy doing and you look forward to. Once you start finding something you love, you’re going to start reaping the mental, emotional, and physical benefits of exercise,” Nelson said.

It’s okay if you miss a day. You can always start again the next day. One tip that she gave was scheduling your workout as if you’re scheduling an important meeting with yourself.

“Never feel guilty for scheduling your workout or your movement in as part of your day because we all know life is so busy, so if you don’t schedule it in, most likely it’s not going to happen,” Nelson said.

So how do you start? Start by trying different activities and getting out of your comfort zone.
