Climbing routes on cliffs used by nesting raptors in Zion National Park will be temporarily closed beginning March 1, 2023. These birds are especially sensitive to being disturbed while they nest. SPRINGDALE, Utah — Portions of several popular climbing routes in Zion National Park closed today, March 1. And they will remain so until further notice.
This is something that happens around this time every year at Zion — the National Park Service closes popular climbing routes to give nesting raptors a little peace and quiet.
If the raptors are disturbed they may abandon their nest site until the following year.
Wildlife biologists will keep an eye on the closed climbing routes in Zion National Park to see if any California condors or peregrine falcons decide to nest. If the raptors choose other locations, the routes may reopen.
The partial climbing closures will impact Angels Landing, Cable Mountain, The Great White Throne, Isaac, The Sentinal, Mountain of the Sun, North Twin Brother, Tunnel Wall, The East Temple, Mount Spry, The Streaked Wall, and Mount Kinesava.
The NPS said that all other cliffs remain open to climbing.
