One person dies on hike at Zion National Park, another hospitalized

SPRINGDALE, Utah — Zion National Park officials say a woman died earlier this week and a man suffered hypothermia after the two experienced severe cold weather during a hike in the park.
Park officials say the married couple had just started their permitted 16-mile hike through the Narrows on Tuesday.
The man reported to park officials that they had become “dangerously cold” overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
Zion National Park hike
Park officials say the couple had stopped roughly 1.5 miles from Riverside Walk. According to the news release, it’s a paved trail that leads from the Temple of Sinawava to the Narrows.
On Wednesday morning, the man continued on to get help, while the woman stayed behind.
The man was eventually found by other park visitors, who aided in helping him down the trail before park rangers arrived. Further up the trail, other visitors had found the woman unresponsive. These visitors rendered life-saving-procedures until the park’s search and rescue team arrived.
The identities of the 33-year-old man and the 31-year-old woman have not been released.
An investigation into the cause of the woman’s death is still ongoing.
