SALT LAKE CITY – Getting burnout is extremely common, especially when you’re trying so hard to achieve productivity.

In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, host Maria Shilaos spoke with Marisa Jo Mayes, Content Creator and Co-founder of Spacetime Monotasking.

They discussed ways to be productive while taking care of your well-being.

It’s hard to define productivity because it’s different for everyone. Mayes thinks of productivity as your output.

However, she wonders why people define each other based on that.

“We’re so quick to label people productive or unproductive when we really have no idea… People speak about it with such little nuance that it’s really harmful to people who are using that information to then decide how they feel about themselves,” Mayes said.

Mayes used to work at a corporate job, but now she’s self-employed and working from home.

At first, she had trouble adjusting because she was still holding herself to the standards of her corporate job.

“When I realized this about myself, I decided to scrap everything I knew about productivity and rebuild that for myself,” Mayes said.

How did she go about changing her mindset? The first step was to acknowledge that she doesn’t have to fit into the standards of this toxic productivity.

“We’re so quick to point out all the ways that our day could’ve gone better or all of the things that we could’ve gotten done,” Mayes said.

She believes we should reflect on our day and think about what we have accomplished and be proud of it.
