SALT LAKE CITY — With each and every snowstorm, the tires on most vehicles are experiencing some wear and tear.

What should you do if your tires are going bald? Jake Burt, of Burt Brothers, joined Dave and Dujanovic with hosts Dave Noriega and Debbie Dujanovic on Monday to discuss what you should do.

Dujanovic asked, “So how do we know when our tires are balding?”

“You know regular maintenance, visual inspections (are) super easy ways really for you to get a grasp of what you’ve got left on your tread,” Burt said. “I think the best notifier is just knowing how available you are to stop when you need to stop.”

Burt also says to follow your gut.

“But if you’re feeling slippery, you’re feeling unsafe, that’s usually the gut check,” he said. “That’s telling you ‘hey, you know what? I should probably put some money in my budget for tires because you’re going to be needing them.'”

Noriega asked, “What does it mean if they’re wearing unevenly? Is that normal or is that a cause for concern?”

“Cause of concern, definitely,” Burt said. “You want to find out how often you’re rotating them, you want to keep them on a regular schedule right there.”

Burt says another test that can be used to see if a wire is worn out is by using a penny.

“Grab Lincoln’s head, just put it upside down,” he said. “If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it is definitely time for tires.”

Dave & Dujanovic can be heard weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon. on KSL NewsRadio. Users can find the show on the KSL NewsRadio website and app, as well as Apple Podcasts and Google Play.
