SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department took two 28-year-old individuals into custody last week for their alleged involvement in a stolen vehicle and several stolen packages.

According to a SLCPD news release, the investigation into this case began on March 24. On that day, authorities were notified of a stolen tan Chevrolet Suburban in the area of 500 S. 400 West.

On March 29, the owner of another suburban made an online report about the license plate to their vehicle having been stolen in the area of 600 W. North Temple Street.

Two days later, officers spotted the stolen suburban in the area of 300 E. South Temple Street. As officers began to follow the vehicle, the driver fled from police in a reckless manner and drove into the Avenues. The driver was later identified as Tiffany Ponce.

Later, officers located the suburban in the area of 326 E. 6th Avenue. They found Ponce and Justin Kennedy walking away from the SUV.

Both individuals were taken into custody without incident.

Stolen vehicle and stolen packages

In their investigation, police discovered the license plates on the stolen SUV were the same license plates that were reported stolen. Additionally, police found several stolen packages inside the stolen SUV.

Police say they allegedly discovered illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia on the two suspects as they were being taken into custody.

Police say the stolen SUV was returned to its owner. Also, police say they made concerted efforts over several days to return the missing packages to their owners. In some instances, police say, the individuals weren’t even aware their packages were missing.

Ponce was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, using plates that belong to another vehicle, theft, use or possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless driving.

Kennedy was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of possession of an illegal substance and outstanding warrants.

Police say the investigation into who stole the packages remains ongoing.
