Flooding: Eubank says the state is OK for now, still has a ways to go

SALT LAKE CITY — KSL-TV meteorologist Kevin Eubank says the state is OK for right now in terms of flooding. However, there are two areas that he is most concerned about for later this week.
Eubank joined Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News to discuss where things stand in terms of potential flooding and looked ahead to the remainder of the week. He also introduces listeners to a new tool that can help them stay informed of rising river waters.
Caplan asked, “So, let’s talk about flooding. …. the weather this week and what we had this weekend and where does that leave us? Are we in good shape? Are we in trouble?”
“We’re in OK shape,” Eubank said. “I mean, this whole spring we’re going to be in kind of that trouble zone. But there are a couple of areas that we’re worried about.”
Currently, the Bear River is at flood stage and is expected to remain above flood stage, according to Eubank. The same is also true for the South Fork of the Ogden River.
“So, the Bear River near Corinne right now is one of the areas that we’re worried about,” Eubank said.
The Sevier River, near Hatch, in central Utah is the other area that has Eubank concerned.
Eubank says the river is holding about 90% capacity right now. However, Eubank also says it is expected to reach its capacity sometime in the next three days.
Use technology to track state flooding
Eubank encourages residents to stay informed on the river flow near them by using the KSL River Flow Tracker.
“You can zoom right in, hit the river,” Eubank said. “See the detail and you can see exactly where it is and where it’s forecasted to peak.”
“The creeks and rivers in Salt Lake City, we’re kind of holding own,” Caplan said
“We’re OK for right now,” Eubank said. “But Jeff, this is a daunting number to think about. The water up at Snowbird, up Little Cottonwood Canyon, there’s still 90% of that water has to come down. We’ve only lost 10% of that snowpack.”
