HOUSTON — Floodwaters have breached the LDS temple in Houston, Texas. The temple president says nearby Cyprus Creek became a river, rising by more than 20 feet, and the current is so strong it’s been dangerous to even try to get to the temple.
It’s in the community of Klein, which is northwest of the city of Houston itself.
Mormon Newsroom reports the water has gone inside part of the temple that includes a baptistry, a marriage waiting room, dressing rooms, kitchen and laundry. But they haven’t been able to get inside to see the extent of the damage.
Several local chapels have also experienced water damage. They are also being used as shelters or to stage relief and cleanup supplies as needed.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says all Houston area missionaries are safe. They gathered enough food and water to shelter for several days. Others were moved before the storm. When the flooding subsides, missionaries will be helping cleanup.
