SUMMIT COUNTY — A motorcyclist is dead after he crashed into the median on I-80.  It happened at milepost 158 between Coalville and Wanship. Utah Highway Patrol troopers said the motorcyclist was traveling east on Saturday around 3:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead on the scene.

UHP troopers said the man was traveling well over the posted speed limit on a 2011 Harley Davidson when he lost control and crashed into the median. There are no reports as to why the man lost control of the motorcycle or why he swerved into the median at this time.

Several witnesses tried to administer first-aid but the man succumbed to his injuries.

The UHP said the man was not wearing a helmet according to witness reports.

The identity of the rider is not being released to give authorities time to notify his family. He was 43 years old.

The UHP reports there were 47 motorcyclists killed on Utah roads in 2019, which is a 24% increase from the year before.  The UHP urges drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to look for motorcycles as motorcycle season is in full swing. They’re also asking cyclists to wear safety equipment, including helmets and to obey the rules of the road.
