SALT LAKE CITY — Schools in Utah are beginning to plan graduation ceremonies around the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, graduation ceremonies were canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and virtual graduations took place.
Many schools held car parades and some even had celebrations on the ski lifts, while others held virtual celebrations.
This year, schools continue to think creatively about how to celebrate the graduating class of 2021. Even though COVID-19 vaccines are rolling out and there are lower case numbers, it’s becoming clear we may not be back to normal in time for graduation.
There’s no question- most students want a traditional graduation ceremony. KSL TV’s Deanie Wimmer reported schools are beginning to plan their graduation ceremonies now to try and get back to a traditional ceremony.
According to Wimmer, Jordan School District sent out a survey asking students and parents if they should do another car parade or hold the ceremony on the football field. Students overwhelmingly voted for in-person graduation ceremonies even if it means the school has to hold two separate ceremonies.
Jordan High School Principal Wendy Dao said they will bring in extra bleachers and seniors will be allowed to invite four people to attend the ceremony. Dao also said that seniors will get the opportunity to decide which ceremony to attend so they can be surrounded by their friends.
KSL TV checked with all the larger school districts in Utah. While many are still working on graduation plans, others are still formulating ideas.
Since circumstances are changing so rapidly with vaccines and the mask mandate, many Utah schools are holding off a bit longer to finalize graduation ceremonies.
