Meet Matt Johnson, the new meteorologist for KSL TV and NewsRadio

SALT LAKE CITY — There is a new voice on Utah’s Morning News on KSL NewsRadio! Long-time meteorologist Grant Weyman retired recently. The new face you’ll see on KSL TV and the new voice you’ll hear on KSL NewsRadio weekday mornings belongs to Matt Johnson.
“I grew up in a small town called Tracy, California,” Johnson told KSL NewsRadio.
“Most people don’t know where it is, but it’s where M.C. Hammer lived, and I think he still lives there. It’s our only claim to fame.”
Matt Johnson’s college and resume
Johnson went to Utah Valley University for his general education and then transferred to the University of Utah for a degree in atmospheric science. (That’s what you call the study of meteorology now.) He started his career at KUTV and worked mostly as a producer there before making the move to KSL.
Matt says he realized he likes being on-air and talking about the weather. “It brings me joy,” he said. “When you do what you love and you’re passionate about it, it’s not hard to wake up early.”
So . . . how early is early?
“2:00 AM. That’s because I’m in Utah County. I’m in Orem. I actually shower the night before to save time. So I wake up, have some oatmeal (my dad got me started on that,) then hop in the car to get to the station and start doing radio hits.”

What does Johnson’s family look like?
“Two boys, two girls in my family. My parents are still in northern California. I have a sister that lives here in Utah. I live with my brother. Best roommate ever. I joke with people we’ve been roommates for 28 years.”
Johnson has taken the job formerly done by Grant Weyman, who was at KSL for more than two decades.
“It’s good for me,” he answered. “It’s good for me to have my mindset be humble. It’s good for me to, as my father says, keep the fire in the belly.”
