Be aware of winter wildlife while recreating outside

SALT LAKE CITY — Since late January of this year, elk have made their way off the mountains and down to the city. However, some of the animals died after being struck by vehicles. 

Because of this, it’s important to recognize seasonal changes in wildlife behavior to help protect them. 

Furthermore, knowing wildlife behavior is vital to keeping yourself, wildlife, and any other companions safe when recreating in winter months.

A release from SLC Public Lands shared some tips to do so. 

Be winter ready to recreate outside among wildlife by following the tips below. 

• Avoid recreating at dawn and dusk in the winter when wildlife is most active.
• Make yourself known! You don’t want to take wildlife by surprise, they don’t typically like surprises. Try attaching small bells to yourself and your pets to warn of your presence. 
• Keep those furry companions close and on leash. 
• Do not feed wildlife. Even if they temp you. This can lead to aggressive encounters and disease. 
• Give wildlife some space, this is their home after all and we’re lucky to enjoy it! Stay calm, and keep your pet clam and under control.
• If you happen to come face-to-face with a wild animal give them a clear escape route by backing away very slowly. Keep your eyes on the animal until it’s gone.
